Welcome
Welcome to The 2018 Lone Star Preview Marching Band Competition presented by The Woodlands High School Band Booster Club. The Woodlands High School Band, Color Guard, and The Woodlands High School Booster Club extend a very special welcome, and thank you to the all the high school bands from all over Texas and their extraordinary student musicians for participating in today's event.
This is an annual event held each October. It is an opportunity for bands to compete and prepare for the Bands of America Super Regional Championships presented by Yamaha and the UIL State Marching Band Contest in San Antonio, November 2-6, 2018. |
Thank You, Judges
We are honored that an exceptional panel of judges from around the country have agreed to share their time, talents and expertise with us. Many of these professionals adjudicate championships for nationally recognized events hosted by Drum Corps International, Winter Guard International and Bands of America. We are extremely fortunate to have such an experienced team of judges.
Tremendous Volunteer Staff
Each year we strive to ensure that everyone attending the Lone Star Preview will have an enjoyable and memorable experience. With that goal in mind, this event is possible because of the tremendous time commitment and volunteer efforts of our students, their families and the friends of TWHS Band and Color Guard.
We are also grateful for the continuing support that we receive from Conroe ISD, our new TWHS Principal Dr. Ted Landry and the Woodforest Bank Stadium facility staff. We hope that you, your directors, instructional staff, parents and supporters have a terrific day. Good luck to all of today’s participants!

Nothing Makes a Memory Like a Cool T-Shirt
Celebrate and remember your band member's hard work and accomplishments today with a 2018 commemorative Lone Star Preview T-Shirt for $20 on sale in the concession area.
These one-of-a kind shirts shirts were designed with the art of Steampunk, a sub-genre of science fiction that uses technology and aesthetic designs inspired by the 19th century. The designers from Big Frog Custom T-shirts and More of The Woodlands used a combination of an atomic band drum major and an airship patterned after the Zeppelin, the long cylinder shape "blimp." Airships are popular forms of transport in steampunk stories.
Steampunk-themed art and visual reference continue throughout the intricate design on the back with each of today's bands listed with the year. Big Frog T-Shirts founder takes pride in creating custom shirts that bring out the essence of a group's personality and energy. Each group is unique, and so every T-shirt is unique.
Founders Marel Sanchez & Daniel Mendez know what it takes to work hard to bring something to life whether that's a T-shirt or a business. Born in Venezuela, both with Master’s Degrees from UT Austin - they had worked for over 24 years with Big Oil developing oil & gas fields worldwide. In 2010, they set home in the Woodlands, TX. In August 2017, they became entrepreneurs with Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More. About The Woodlands High School Band
This year, The Woodlands High School Band will be performing its show, “Synapse.” Joni Perez, Head Band Director since 2010, leads the band with Assistant Band Director, Kyle Witty; Director of Percussion, Andy Salmon; and Color Guard Instructor, Cyndi Robbins.
The Woodlands High School Band is excited to be taking the field once again this year with many past accomplishments in both marching and concert activities. TWHS Marching Band is a 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2016 UIL State Marching Contest Finalist. In the Bands of America competitions, TWHS band has been a regional finalist over thirty consecutive times and is an eight time Grand National Finalist. In 2013, the band placed first at the Bands of America Super Regional in San Antonio and was named the 2013 BOA Grand National Champions in Indianapolis.
TWHS Winter Guard is a former Texas State and WGI World Champion and competes in these events annually across the state of Texas. The Winter Guard is the 2013 winner of the WGI Southwestern Regional, is a 2015 WGI Dayton Scholastic Open finalist and was promoted to the elite World Class this past year. TWHS Varsity Winter Guard will be attending the WGI World Championships this coming spring.
TWHS Percussion performed as a featured ensemble at the 2014 Percussive Arts Society in Indianapolis and performs extensive percussion ensemble concerts each spring. Its ensembles have been awarded the top honors in various percussion ensemble contests across the Houston area.
The Woodlands High School Band sends four competitive concert ensembles to the UIL Concert & Sight-Reading contest each year. All four concert bands consistently earn Superior ratings at these events. Past concert band performances include the BOA National Concert Band Festival, the Field Studies Festival at Carnegie Hall in New York in 2009, and the Midwest Clinic in Chicago in both 2003 and 2012. This coming spring of 2018, The Woodlands High School Band will host its 12th Annual Solo & Ensemble Festival which offers each musician an opportunity to showcase their musical talents through solo and ensemble performances. TWHS Band has many of its members consistently earn recognition in Region, Area and All State Bands year after year. The Woodlands High School Band is a proud recipient of the Sudler Flag of Honor and the Sudler Shield.
These accomplishments and the success of TWHS Band would not be possible without the commitment of its members, its parent booster club and the generous donations from our local businesses and individuals.

Competition Format
Lone Star Preview has adopted the contest format of Bands of America for today’s event. Listed below are some of the specifics concerning the format.
Eligibility: Eligibility is open to all high school bands. All participating members must be enrolled at the same high school as full-time students, or at the feeder school of the participating high school. All performers who contribute to the performance must be students.
Event Registration/Preliminary Performance Info: The event shall be limited to no more than 26 bands. Entries will be accepted via the online entry form beginning February 20, 2018 at 8:00 AM CT through August 31, 2018 (or until maximum number of entries has been received). Any entries received prior to February 20 at 8:00 AM CT will not be considered for placement until that date. The defending champion will have the option to perform last in the preliminary competition. Entry deadline is August 31, 2018 or once 26 bands have registered, whichever comes first. Preliminary competition will start no earlier than 9:00 A.M. and band performances will be scheduled at 15-minute intervals.
Classification: Enrollment for classification is based on Bands of America. Bands are classified by school enrollment, grades 10-12 only. Under our four-class system (same as Bands of America classification):
- Class A is up to 600 students
- Class AA is 601-1200
- Class AAA is 1201-1700
- Class AAAA is 1701 and above
Adjudicators: Judges will be selected from the lists from Bands of America, Drum Corps International and Winter Guard International. These organizations provide extensive numbers management training for their judges. The panel will be selected from all parts of the country in order to obtain the best possible adjudication team.
Scoring System: The Bands of America scoring system/sheets will be used for this event. It is the position of Bands of America that music is the more important aspect of the performance, with marching as the presentation and visual enhancement of the program. Similarly, more emphasis has been placed on the effectiveness to the audience and to general effect judges, than on fine-line perfection of the performance judges - which may be an aspect to work on for even better effectiveness. Consequently, the weight of the numbers in the Bands of America scoring system places 60% of the value on music and 40% on visual, and at the same time, 60% of the score is within the area of general effect and 40% within the performance area. The point allotment for the competition is as follows:
20 points* Music Performance (Individual), judged on the field
20 points* Music Performance (Ensemble), judged from the stands
20 points* Visual Performance (Individual), judged from the field
20 points* Visual Performance (Ensemble), judged from the stands
20 points General Effect Visual, judged from the highest point in the stands
40 points General Effect Music, judged from the highest point in the stands
Timing & Penalties Judge
*Averaged
If two or more bands have a tie in their final score, the higher placement will be awarded to the band with the higher raw score (subtotal before penalties). If, after using this criterion, a tie still exists, the highest General Effect total will be used to determine placement. This procedure will only be applied in class champion and finals competitions. When bands achieve the same (tied) score in prelims, and when such score causes a placement e for the last position advancing to the finals competition, each band with a tied score will advance.
Preliminary Awards Presentation: At the conclusion of the preliminary competition, all unit drum majors will gather for Class awards and announcement of finalists. Overall preliminary scores will not be announced, nor made public until the conclusion of the finals competition. Division ratings will be announced and awards will be given for each classification as follows:
Division Ratings:
I 75 and above
II 60 - 74
III 45 - 59
IV 44 and below
Awards:
1st, 2nd, 3rd in each class
- Outstanding Music Performance in each class (highest average of the 2 music performance scores)
- Outstanding Visual Performance in each class (highest average of the 2 visual performance scores)
- Outstanding General Effect in each class (highest composite score of all three GE scores)
- Outstanding Auxiliary in each Class
- Outstanding Percussion in each Class
Following the announcement of the Class placement awards, the top 10 scoring bands, regardless of class, will be announced in random order. The finals competition will be void of any classes. Preliminary Class champion performers will be awarded medals at the Finals awards presentation.
In the event that there is only one band entered in a class, only the 1st-place class placement trophy will be presented. No caption awards or champion medals will be presented to that band. That band may, however, opt to compete with bands in a higher class as long as they agree prior to the start of the event.
Finals Event Schedule: Immediately following the announcement of the finalist bands, a meeting for the director or representative of each finalist band will be held in a designated area. Finalist performance order will be determined by a top-5, bottom-5 draw. The top 5 scoring bands will draw for the last 5 performance times and the bottom 5 scoring bands will draw for the first 5 performance times. In the event that a "Class Champion" band does not score high enough to place in the finals competition, that band will have the option to perform in the finals event at either the beginning or conclusion of the finals competition.
Finals Awards Presentation: The event will feature a full-band retreat with all finalist bands and Class Champion exhibition bands. Awards will be presented to finalist bands for 1st through 10th, as well as Highest Achievements (same as prelims). At the conclusion of the Final awards presentation, members will be dismissed to congratulate each other. The champion unit will be offered the option to have the field for a victory performance, once all performers have left the field.
Critique: A judges’ critique session will be available immediately following the Finals Awards presentation for those bands that performed in exhibition or as a finalist during the evening. This will be on a first-come, first served, basis and is optional for the aforementioned bands.
